We pushed hard to get some miles under our belt. It was a trial for us, since we weren't sure we'd be able to manage riding the amount needed to actually get to the Rockies. We took I90 all the way, and were able to manage about 450 miles. We stopped for breakfast near Erie at a rest stop with a catwalk over the highway. The Berlove Kenneys used to stop there on the way to Dena and Barts, and Naomi and Noah would jump to clear the trucks.
There were some windy patches in Ohio, and Naomi he to fight hard to stay on the road on her 650. It's tougher than you might think to battle the invisible.
We set up camp at Pokagon State Park. It has lots of the same kinds of plants, but doesn't have any coniferous trees. It makes the ground plants grow to be enormous and thick, but you can still see through all the trees. We were hot and disgusting when we landed, so we high tailed it to the lake for a swim.

At sunset the fireflies came up. It's strange to realize that they have been missing for so many years. You don't see them much in the northeast anymore.
Mike met a guy named Paul at a neighboring campsite and invited him over. He came by with a plate full of Vermont Cheddar, apple, and homemade sourdough bread with a great crumb (Paul was impressed with Mike for knowing that word). We shared some bourbon and a fire with him. Paul is in his mid sixties, has a mustache and a New England accent, and worked both as an engineer and as an actor. He is intensely interested in hearing and sharing. He lives in an intentional community in Denver with his wife Honey. It turns out he graduated from BU, where Naomi works, and had some stories about former president Silber-who was then in his first year-shutting down Vietnam war protests with tear gas. His brother studied Gurdjieff before he died (his brother, though I suppose Gurdjieff too).
