After a late night at our campsite sharing homemade bread, Vermont cheddar, apples and bourbon with our new friend Paul from Denver via Southern New Hampshire, where far ranging topics such as intentional communities (communes), urban redevelopment, linguistics of sign language, and water resources engineering in developing countries, we hit the road around 8AM, and the heat came on early.
Still on I-90W, heading for Chicago for a late lunch-date with Chris and Lauren.

Took a detour to a couple of Chicago-area motorcycle dealers looking for some gear upgrades for Naomi. She ended up with a nice new pair of gloves from a downtown dealer, and a new pair of boots from a metro-west BMW dealer with carelessly indifferent customer service. Temperatures around 90 in urban traffic, no fun.
Chicago dogs for lunch in Wrigleyville, Chris and Lauren's new neighborhood. Great to catch up with those guys as they're settling into their new jobs and preparing to become parents.
Then back on the road in the searing heat heading for Milwaukee. Traffic pushes the oil temp on the R1200GS right to the edge of the danger zone, then when we finally get moving above 35, the stored heat coming off the cylinder heads roasts my feet.
We don't get far outside Chicago, Naomi finds us a hotel in a state park right on Lake Michigan. We can swim in the lake, and enjoy a nice shower and air conditioning. Just what we needed at the end of a long hot day.
Over dinner we pick our destination for tomorrow; Minneopa State Park, about 80 miles west of Rochester, MN on route 14. That's right, we'll be departing I-90.
